Abbotsford International Air Show -- Abbotsford, BC. August 7-9, 2009 I've heard so many good things about Abbotsford International air show, that this year I decided to visit this event. I decided to drive to Abbotsford, a 2800 mile (4536 Km) one way trip, because the last thing I wanted was my camera gear to be lost or stolen. That happened before, my entire luggage just disappeared at the Toronto International Airport. The weather was just awful for photography, heavy overcast gray skies on Friday and Saturday, and on Sunday it started to clear up toward the end of the show. Over all for me it was a disappointing show, and it is very unlikely that I will ever return Abbotsford. For a very comprehensive review of the show please read my article posted here (just click on the link). The flight line was very far from the spectator's area and using a long telephoto lens did not help the situation any either due to haze, and heat haze distortion from the warm air rising from the tarmac. See examples here. Thus, I decided to try to take images of the static aircraft and the ones on the 'active ramp' area preferably with close ups of the pilots. To a degree I achieved the latter, but static was very difficult as media and professionals were not allowed in early before the crowds. The organizers should pay a bit more attention to the requirement of the media and professionals, and should improve several issues noted in my review. While the actual events were not bad, due to the distance some were difficult to see. For me the highlights were meeting Captain Tim 'Donor' Woods, the CF-18 Century Demo pilot and his crew, and the crew of the CP-140 Aurora. I have to say thanks to Roger Bishop and Captain Alex Cadieux of the Canadian Armed Forces for their generous help with this. There were plenty of aircraft and warbirds present at the air show, The Skyhawk Parachute Team opened the show and the Canadian Armed Forces had a tactical demonstration on all three days which was quite interesting. On the available CD, corrected in Photoshop, images of these planes can be found: CP-140 Aurora, T-6 Golden Hawk, F-86 Hawk One, CF-18 Century Hornet, MiG 17, USN F/A-18 Super Hornet 'Rhino', P-51B Mustang, P-51D Mustang, F7F Tigercat, F-15, F-16, F/A-18 Hornet, CT-144 Tutor and the Snowbirds. I posted some typical images of the Abbotsford air show from the available CD. The photo CD has over 220 great images approx. 1800x1200 @180 ppi. The cost of the CD is only $35.00US with s/h to North America. To place your order for the CD click here.
