Quebec City celebrated its 400th year anniversary, and this show was a part of the year long festivities. It was held at the Quebec City's Jean-Lesage International Airport. The show started on June 13th Friday evening, with some parachute jumping and fireworks. The real air show was scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. Saturday started out to be sunny, but the weather changed drastically near 2:30 pm, and after a vicious storm I left around 3:15 pm, or I should say tried. I was stuck in the parking lot for over an hour as many others decided to leave too, not to be subjected to more rain or hail. The show was basically centered around four Aerobatic teams: The Red Arrows from England, the Blue Angels and the Thunderbirds from the USA, and the Snowbirds from Canada.
The first team was the Blue Angels, followed by the Red Arrows, then by the Thunderbirds and the show was to close with the Snowbirds. The weather cooperated for the first two teams, but as soon as the Thunderbirds got off the ground, a storm struck with a bit of hail and massive amounts of rain. While we all got soaked, the Thunderbirds kept on flying, I managed to get some interesting shots in the rain but most were not worth the effort. The storm stopped just as the Thunderbirds finished their routines and started to land. Since I was soaked, decided to leave and not wait around for the CF-18 demonstration fly-by or for the Snowbirds. Which turned out to be wise, as I waited in my car to exit from the parking lot, it started to rain and stopped several times.
Since I do not speak French, it was hard to follow all the announcements during the show, and missed a couple of interesting shots due to that. Over all, the show was not bad. I liked the Red Arrows a lot, but they flew too far, perhaps due to their tight formations showing lots of finesse, the Blue Angels and the Thunderbirds flew with more aggressiveness than finesse, but it was a lot of fun to watch them.
It rained all night Saturday and during Sunday morning. I decided to drive back to Toronto in the early morning, as I was not prepared to stand in ankle deep mud near the tarmac. A friend of mine who was at the show on Friday evening and Saturday returned on Sunday morning but according to him; all the inbound routes in the morning to the air show were closed, and he decided to return home too. I'm not sure if the show continued later in the day, or if it was cancelled due to the rain storms.
